Perdon de Barbana and “Sabo Grando”
Saturday 4 July will see the traditional “Sabo Grando” take place, marking the start of the celebrations for the “Perdòn di Barbana” pilgrimage on Sunday 5 July
The history of the ‘Perdòn di Barbana’ pilgrimage, on the other hand, dates back as far as 1237, when Grado was spared from a terrible plague. Every year, on the first Sunday in July, a picturesque procession of boats decked out with flags and garlands makes its way across the lagoon from Grado to Barbana.
Programme for Sabo Grando on 4 July:
- 12.00 pm At ‘Pampagnola’ – Angelus prayer and tribute by the authorities, bearers and associations to the Madonnina del Mare
- 6.00 pm Basilica of Saint Euphemia: Holy Rosary and Holy Mass Singing of the ‘Litany of Our Lady’”
- 8.45 pm Churchyard of the Basilica “Il Sabo grando” (organised by the “Città di Grado” Band)
Programma del Perdon de Barnana 5 luglio:
- 8.00 am: Holy Mass at the Basilica of Saint Euphemia, followed by a procession from the Basilica to Mandracchio harbour
- ore 08.45 processione con le barche verso Barbana
- 09.45 Mass Solemn presided over by the Archbishop, in Barbana
- 12.00 pm: Angelus and departure from Barbana
- 12.45 pm Arrival at the harbour and procession to the Basilica
- 1.30 pm Basilica: Te Deum of Thanksgiving

The swing bridge is closed from 09.00 to 09.30 and from approximately 12.00 to 12.30.
